The Purpose of Education
People desire the best possible life for kids, and this requires education. Education preserves and strengthens society by instilling shared knowledge, skills, and values into students. An education should lead students to become effective problem solvers, good stewards, and well-rounded citizens. This requires a structure of consistent standards and family involvement to create a space that inherently yields progress towards excellence. A students' education should also provide them opportunities to take ownership of their own social and academic life, and offer rewarding electives that enhance their personal growth and prepare them for their future. By integrating a wide variety of events that support and enrich students' lives, schools can become vibrant centerpieces of their community.
The Purpose of Math
First, I will say this, doing hard things is good for you and your character. What we learn and what we do changes us; it changes how we look at the world, the things we notice, the questions we ask, and the awesome things we are capable of. Math also teaches us to solve problems we face by orienting us to what we know, what we need to know, and assembling logical steps. Math allows us to build good habits such as organization, neatness, precision, and learning from our mistakes. Not only are these are professional skills that can be used to form valuable solutions, but they're also invaluable life skills. While we cannot foresee exactly what the future will hold, or what career field(s) someone might end up in, we do know what develops good and capable humans. Being a student of math gives you the tools to build a future you may not even know you need.
The Role of the Student
A student's job is to open themselves to constructive feedback that enables them to progressively learn and mature as an individual. This requires honesty, courage, and hard work. Students should make goals to challenge themselves to improve in all areas of their life. A student is to become a self-advocate who builds positive, proactive habits. A student should work toward leaving all the distractions of life at the threshold of every class they enter, and actively persevere in the subject at hand with their thoughts and their actions. A class should work to becoming a cohesive team. Teammates support each other, allow each other space to grow, and hold each other accountable. Teammates are respectful, encouraging, and have integrity. As students are given more freedom, they are also given more responsibility and have greater expectations.
The Role of the Teacher
A teacher should be a compassionate leader who provides appropriate levels of care, challenge, and discipline to ensure the growth of each student. In this role, a teacher should provide authoritative guidance, and invest in the development of the skills and character students will need to succeed. Teachers must work to get to know and build connections with students, and bridge the gap with parents and other stakeholders in a student’s life. A teacher should also build a cohesive and efficient culture. This involves forming a well regulated environment, and providing security where students can learn in peace and make positive connections with others. A teacher should seek to create meaningful lessons that engage students in exploring the intricacies of content, supported by feedback that helps keep everyone on the right track.
