What is it required for in high school?
If a student passes accelerated math in 7th and 8th grade, they will satisfy their high school Algebra I requirement early, which allows them to bypass Physical Science. In turn they can:
Join the Engineering Academy
Take Algebra II & Chemistry early (10th grade)
Take AP math & science courses early (11th grade)
Take IB math & science courses early (11th grade)
Take AP Physics C — Electricity and Magnetism (12th grade)
What is accelerated math like?
Regular 7th grade math is already a considerable step-up in difficulty over 6th grade. Compared to regular 7th grade math, accelerated math:
Is faster paced (less time to learn, review, and catch-up)
Explores topics in more detail and depth
Has more homework
Has longer and harder tests
Yes; as soon as I recognize a long-term concern in a student's academic performance, I will contact your family to make any appropriate recommendations, such as requesting a schedule change. I do not make these recommendations lightly.
Can I join accelerated math during the school year?
Yes, but this is uncommon for me to recommend. Early in the year, I will bring up this possibility on an individual basis. Just because someone is a good student, likes math, or is bored doesn't necessarily mean they are a good fit. Normally there is a good reason a student didn't sign up for accelerated math.
